There’s a special kind of joy that comes from spotting crochet on TV. Whether it’s a cosy blanket draped over a couch or a stylish accessory worn by a character, these little glimpses of crochet bring a thrill to enthusiasts like us. One particularly memorable moment for me was during the finale of “Happy Valley”, where a beautiful crochet blanket was thrown onto a fire. Seeing it almost break apart in the flames was heart-wrenching!
Recently, I shared this experience on my Instagram account, and it turns out I’m not alone in this excitement. Many friends from the crochet community chimed in, sharing how they too love to point at the TV and excitedly shout, “Crochet blanket!” whenever they spot one.
But why do we love these moments so much? I believe it comes down to the joy of seeing something we cherish being appreciated in mainstream media. Film and TV sets are meticulously crafted, with every item chosen to enhance the scene. The inclusion of crochet pieces isn’t by accident. Some set designer saw the beauty and warmth that crochet adds to the ambience, and we, as crochet lovers, truly appreciate that recognition.

Beyond the aesthetic appeal, there’s a sense of validation in seeing our craft represented on screen. It’s a nod to the countless hours we spend creating our own pieces, and it feels like a little celebration of the crochet community every time we spot a handmade item.
Here are a few tips for spotting crochet on TV:
1. Look for Cosy Scenes: Crochet blankets and pillows are often used to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Pay attention to living rooms, bedrooms, and other cosy settings.
2. Check Outward Characters: Characters portrayed as creative or artsy often have crochet items around them. Look at their wardrobe and surroundings for handmade accessories and décor.
3. Historical and Period Dramas: Crochet has a long history, so period dramas often feature crochet garments and homeware as part of their authentic set design.
4. Family and Children’s Shows: These programs frequently use crochet for its nostalgic and comforting qualities. Look for baby blankets, toys, and colourful Afghans.
