Transform Your Space: Autumn Cleaning and Self-Care Journey

I am currently in the process of inner healing and had embarked on a year of self discovery which started in June. The Summer months where filled with sadness and confusion so like the leaves, I was letting go .

As the vibrant colours of summer begin to fade and the crisp autumn air rolls in, I feel an undeniable pull for a sacred journey inwards.

It felt like the perfect time to refresh my home as well as my mind with a seasonal clean and declutter.

Autumn, with its gentle reminder of the approaching winter, encourages us to prepare our living spaces for the cosier months ahead. This is a chance to reflect, reorganize, and make room for what truly matters.

Here’s how you can approach your autumn clean and declutter, making the transition into winter smooth and stress-free.

1. Store Away Sunshine Clothes

The first task of your autumn clean should be packing away your summer wardrobe. Those lightweight dresses, shorts, and sandals that were perfect for warm, sunny days are probably not what you’ll be wearing in the months ahead.

As you transition your wardrobe: This was such a tough job as so many items held memories for me. The beautiful memories of my summer holiday with my sons felt so emotional to pack away. The items which reminded me of my ex fiancé, I could not wait to bin!

Evaluate What You Wore: Did you wear every summer item this season? If not, it might be time to part ways with pieces that no longer serve you. Hold onto the staples you love, but donate or recycle items you didn’t reach for.

Store Smart: When packing away seasonal items, ensure they are clean and in good condition to prevent any surprises next year. Store them in airtight containers or vacuum-sealed bags to save space and protect against dust or moisture.

Create Space for Autumn and Winter: Replace your summer attire with cosy knits, scarves, and boots. A tidy and organized wardrobe will make getting dressed in the colder months easier and more enjoyable.

2. Let Go of What Doesn’t Bring You Joy

Autumn is a natural time for reflection. With the slower pace of the season, take a look around your home and consider what items are truly adding value to your life. Here’s a simple way to approach this process:

Room by Room: Start with one room at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Go through your belongings and ask yourself: “Does this item make me happy? Do I use it regularly?” If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go.

Donate, Recycle, or Toss: Once you’ve identified the items you no longer need, sort them into piles for donation, recycling, or disposal. Remember, there’s someone else who may benefit from things you no longer use.

Sentimental Items: Decluttering doesn’t mean you have to be ruthless with sentimental items. Keep the ones that genuinely hold meaning for you, but consider how they’re stored or displayed, maybe it’s time to create a memory box for keepsakes rather than having them scattered throughout your home.

3. Make an Inventory of What You Do Need

A big part of decluttering is also about preventing clutter from building up again. As you prepare for winter, it’s easy to go overboard with purchasing toiletries, cleaning supplies, or even winter clothing. To avoid over-buying:

Check What You Have: Before you run to the store for more hand creams, shower gels, or laundry detergent, take stock of what you already own. You might be surprised to find that you don’t need as much as you thought.

Create a List: As you go through your things, make a list of what you truly need to restock. This will prevent impulse buying and help you stay organized.

Plan Ahead for Winter: Consider things you’ll need as the colder months approach, like moisturizing skincare products, extra blankets, or seasonal décor. Having a curated list of essentials will help you avoid accumulating unnecessary extras.

4. Prepare for the Winter Months

As autumn deepens, your home becomes your sanctuary for the winter ahead. Preparing now means you’ll be ready to enjoy the cosy months without stress. Here’s how to winterize your space:

Deep Clean: Now is the time to deep clean areas that are often overlooked. Clean out kitchen cupboards, dust light fixtures, that kind of stuff. Doing these chores now means you can hibernate without guilt when the weather turns harsh.

Stock Up on Essentials: Make sure you have a winter supply of things you’ll rely on during the colder months.

Create a Cosy Atmosphere: As you prepare for winter, think about how you can make your home a warm, inviting space. Swap lighter bedding for thicker duvets, add soft throws to your couches, and switch out bright summer accents for warmer tones like deep reds, oranges, or earth tones.

5. Mindful Decluttering: Set the Tone for a Calm Winter

Autumn’s slower pace makes it the perfect season for a mindful declutter. Instead of rushing through, take time to reflect on your belongings and home. As you tidy up, think about how you want your home to feel during the winter months, peaceful, warm, and uncluttered. This preparation will allow you to truly enjoy the cosy moments ahead.

When you declutter with intention and focus on what truly matters, you’ll find that the items left behind are the ones that bring joy and simplicity to your life. Your home will feel lighter, and you’ll be able to welcome the winter with a calm, cozy, and organized space.

Lastly

Autumn is not just a season of changing leaves but also a season of renewal. As you declutter your space, store away summer memories, and prepare for the winter months, you’ll be setting the stage for a peaceful and cosy season. By focusing on what you truly need and cherish, you can create a home that reflects the calm and warmth that autumn and winter bring.

Hope your day is magical and you notice the small precious moments.
