Embracing Mindful Spending: Finding Joy in What I Already Have

Do you ever feel like you live in a world that constantly encourages consumption? Me too, so I’ve decided to take a step back. I no longer want to chase fleeting dopamine hits from buying things I don’t need. Instead, I’m shifting my focus toward appreciating what I already own, using up my resources fully, and making more sustainable choices.

Now don’t get me wrong here I am not a rich lady living the life of luxury and a endless supply of money to spend. I do love a little charity shop haul and a pop to Primark home dept though. But I want to be more mindful of even my charity shop purchases, I often buy stuff that I do not need simply because it is a bargain.

This year is my commitment to mindful spending, sustainability, and breaking the cycle of unnecessary consumption.

I even have enough new mugs!

Yarn: No New Additions Until I Create Something New

As a lover of crafts, I have plenty of yarn waiting to be used. My stash is full, and I even have several works-in-progress (WIPs) ready to go. There’s no need to buy more unless I’ve used up what I have, unless, of course, I come across an irresistible deal at a charity shop (because sustainability wins there, too!).

Beauty Stuff: Replacements Only

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest skincare trends or a new shade of lipstick. Skincare has always been my vice. But the truth is, I already have everything I need. No more impulse beauty purchases, just replacing items when they run out if I feel they are worth replacing.

Clothes: A Capsule Wardrobe That Works

My wardrobe is complete. I’ve built a collection of comfortable, versatile pieces that see me through every season. No more chasing trends for me, well not that I ever followed fashion to be fair or buying just for the sake of it, I have everything I need to look and feel good.

My wardrobe had a huge transition after bowel surgery as my clothes no longer felt comfortable.

Pyjamas & Underwear: No New Additions This Year

Let’s be real, how many pyjamas and underwear do I actually need? I have more than enough to last the year, so I won’t be adding anything new.

Coats & Shoes: Covered for Every Season

I already own coats for all types of weather, and my favourite, trusty shoes serve me well. No need to add to my collection when I have everything I need.

Perfume: No More Until It’s Empty

Perfume is a luxury I enjoy, but I don’t need more than what I already have. No new bottles will enter my collection until I’ve used up the ones I own. My sons always buy me my favourite ones for Christmas so I am socked up for the year ahead.

Final Thoughts: Gratitude Over Consumption

This journey isn’t about deprivation, it’s about mindfulness. I spent the last six month or so filtering through my possessions having a big sort out and finding areas that needed my attention such as post surgery re vamping my clothes.

This year is about appreciating what I already own, making conscious choices, and reducing waste. I’m excited to see how this shift in mindset will not only benefit my finances but also bring a greater sense of satisfaction and peace.

Here’s to a year of using, appreciating, and resisting the pull of unnecessary spending!

  1. I just watched a video of how people lived in the 1940s (during rationing for WW2) and was so shocked on how little they consumed! I’m doing the same as you this year
