Daily Wellness in a Shot: The Power of Ginger, Lemon & Turmeric

There’s something beautifully simple about starting your day with a little shot of wellness. No, not that kind of shot, I’m talking about the kind made with fiery ginger, golden turmeric, zesty lemons, and fresh apple juice, all finished with a pinch of black pepper. It’s a bold little blend, and it packs a surprising punch for such a small glass.

I first started experimenting with these daily shots after having bowel surgery. I was looking for a natural way to support my gut health and help rebalance my microbiome. Everything I read pointed toward the anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting powers of ginger and turmeric, the detoxifying benefits of lemon, and the soothing sweetness of apple juice. It all sounded like the perfect elixir for healing from the inside out.

But here’s the truth: I couldn’t tolerate it at first.

My digestive system was still incredibly sensitive, and dealing with diverticulitis meant that spicy, acidic, or overly stimulating foods weren’t exactly welcomed guests in my gut. That meant even something as natural and wholesome as this little wellness shot caused discomfort and pain. So, I paused. I gave my body the time it needed to recover and strengthen before reintroducing anything intense, even if it was healthy.

Eventually, once my system settled and inflammation calmed, I gave it another go, this time adjusting the ingredients to be gentler when needed. Smaller amounts of ginger, less acidity, and sips instead of full-on shots. It made all the difference.

Why This Combo Works (When the Timing Is Right)

Ginger: Known for its ability to ease nausea, reduce inflammation, and aid digestion, but it can be intense if your gut is in a fragile state.

Turmeric: The golden anti-inflammatory hero, especially when paired with black pepper to boost its absorption.

Lemon: A hit of vitamin C and detox support, though its acidity might need to be moderated for sensitive stomachs.

Apple Juice: The sweet, soothing base that helps mellow the bold flavours while delivering antioxidants and a little natural sugar.

Black Pepper: Just a pinch helps activate turmeric’s superpowers—small but mighty!

My Go-To Recipe (Now That I Can Tolerate It)

1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled

1 thumb-sized piece of fresh turmeric, peeled

Juice of 2 lemons (or 1 if you’re easing in)

1 cup of fresh apple juice

A pinch of black pepper

Blend, strain (if you prefer it smooth), and sip slowly. I keep mine in a little glass bottle in the fridge, ready to go for a couple of days.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t a miracle cure. But it is a beautiful daily ritual, one that reminds me to check in with my body, to listen to what it needs, and to feed it with intention. For anyone coming out of surgery or dealing with digestive conditions like diverticulitis, I recommend you go slow and listen to your body.
