Living with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or navigating the shifting tides of menopause can feel like a constant balancing act. You’re tired, achy, foggy, and overwhelmed, and often, conventional treatments only go so far. If you’re looking for a gentle, natural way to support your body and mind, Ashwagandha might be the herbal hero you’ve been searching for.

In today’s fast-paced world, more people are turning to natural remedies to support their well-being, and Ashwagandha is one of the top stars in the spotlight. But what exactly is this herb, and why is it gaining so much popularity?
What Is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, is a powerful adaptogenic herb that has been used for over 3,000 years in Ayurvedic medicine. The name “Ashwagandha” comes from the Sanskrit words ashva, meaning horse, and gandha, meaning smell, referring to both the scent of its root and the belief that it can impart the strength and vitality of a horse.
This small shrub grows in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. Its roots and berries are used to make various herbal preparations.
Benefits of Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is best known for its adaptogenic properties, helping the body manage stress, but its benefits go far beyond that:
1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Ashwagandha helps regulate cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone. Multiple studies have shown it can significantly reduce stress and anxiety symptoms, making it a natural alternative to pharmaceutical interventions.
2. Improves Sleep
Often paired with its calming effects, Ashwagandha may also promote better sleep quality. It’s especially helpful for those with insomnia or poor sleep due to stress.
3. Supports Cognitive Function
It may enhance memory, focus, and mental clarity. Some research suggests Ashwagandha improves attention and reduces brain fog, especially in people with high stress.
4. Boosts Energy and Stamina
Rather than acting like a stimulant, Ashwagandha supports natural energy production. It helps reduce fatigue and increase endurance, which is especially helpful for those with chronic fatigue or low energy.
5. Supports Immune Health
By modulating stress and inflammation, Ashwagandha can support the immune system indirectly, especially during periods of burnout or overwork.
6. Hormonal Balance and Fertility
In men, Ashwagandha has been shown to improve testosterone levels and fertility. In women, it may help with hormonal balance, particularly during periods of stress or perimenopause.
How to Take Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha comes in various forms, capsules, powders, tinctures, and teas. The most common and convenient method is capsules or tablets.
Typical Dosage:
For stress relief and general health: 300–600 mg per day (standardized extract with 5% withanolides)
For sleep support: 300 mg taken in the evening
For athletic performance or stamina: Up to 1,000 mg per day, split into two doses
Always follow the dosage instructions on the product label and consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you are taking other medications.
Who Should Avoid Ashwagandha?
While Ashwagandha is generally safe for most people, there are some exceptions:
Pregnant or breastfeeding women: It may cause uterine contractions or other complications.
People with autoimmune conditions (like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis): Ashwagandha may stimulate the immune system, which could worsen symptoms.
Those taking thyroid medication: It can increase thyroid hormone levels, so caution is needed.
Anyone on sedatives, blood pressure meds, or diabetes medication: It may amplify the effects of these drugs.
My Story
I used to take the Pukka Ashwagandha tablets then once diagnosed with high blood pressure I switched to lower dose forms within tea and other blends which I will discus in a separate blog. I feel this works best for me and I still get the benefits of this magical medicine.

My advice would be start small, maybe a tea and see how your body reacts. A herbal tea infused with ashwagandha may be all the relaxation you need.

This tea I use is from Holland & Barret, here is a link to buy them.
If you have a medical condition or take prescription medications, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before adding Ashwagandha to your routine.
Ashwagandha is a time-tested herbal ally in the world of natural wellness. Whether you’re looking to manage stress, sleep better, boost energy, or support hormonal balance, this ancient root has something to offer. As with any supplement, thoughtful and informed use is key, listen to your body, and when in doubt, talk to your healthcare provider.
Final Thoughts
I am not a doctor. I don’t play one on TV, and my medical degree is as non-existent as my ex’s accountability. Everything I share comes from personal experience or my experience as a qualified holistic therapist…but I am not YOUR therapist and I have never done a full consultation on you individually. What works for me might not work for you, so please consult your actual doctor (yes, the qualified kind) before trying anything new.
