Starting Your Period; and Why It Should Be Celebrated

Let’s be real, many of us didn’t exactly pop the confetti when we got our first period. For some, it came with confusion, embarrassment, or even fear. For others, it was brushed off with a quick chat and a pack of pads shoved into our school bag like contraband.

But here’s the thing: starting your period is a milestone. A rite of passage. And in so many cultures, it’s deeply rooted in wisdom, strength, and the beginning of something powerful. So why don’t we celebrate it more?

As a mum, a therapist, and someone who once stood awkwardly in a school bathroom wondering what the hell was going on “down there,” even though I knew exactly what menstruation was, what you use and all that it entails, but so many didn’t back then. I want to shift the narrative, not just for ourselves, but for the next generation and also maybe to heal the inner child within anyone who felt ashamed or alone.

Bleeding each month isn’t shameful. It’s a sign that your body is functioning with incredible intelligence. It’s your hormones doing their thing, your cycle setting its rhythm, your body preparing for a whole host of complex things whether you want babies or not. It’s magic, really. Messy, inconvenient magic; but magic all the same.

And yes, I know for some of us, our periods haven’t exactly been kind. Pain, PMS, irregular cycles, heavy bleeding, hormonal rollercoasters; trust me, I see you. But even with the challenges, our cycle connects us to our bodies in a way that deserves recognition, not silence.

So here’s what I propose:

Let’s talk openly about our first periods with our daughters, nieces, and even our friends.

Let’s ditch the shame and secrecy that was handed down to us.

Let’s create little rituals of celebration, whether it’s a special journal, a thoughtful gift, or just a conversation that says, “Welcome to this new chapter, and I’ve got you.”

Periods aren’t dirty, gross, or something to be hidden. They’re a natural, healthy part of who we are. And starting your period? That’s a moment that deserves acknowledgment. Not just as the start of menstruation, but as the beginning of a deeper relationship with your body.

Let’s rewrite the story together, one empowered bleed at a time.
