Yarnsmiths Merino Wool & Yarnsmiths Kid Mohair Silk Crochet Baby Blanket

Once upon a stitch, I decided to create a very special blanket. Not just any blanket, oh no. This one would be soft as a cloud, bright, fun, and just magical enough to turn heads at the local park stroll.

I began my quest for the perfect yarn and stumbled upon Yarnsmiths Merino Wool. It was love at first squish. But I wasn’t done, this tale needed texture. So I paired it with the ever-so-dreamy Yarnsmiths Kid Mohair Silk. Like a fairy-tale duo, these yarns danced together on my hook like they were born to be entwined.

Now, have you noticed that most baby prams these days are dressed in dramatic greys and mysterious blacks? Sleek, yes, but they were crying out (politely) for a pop of whimsy. I wanted a blanket that would whisper stories and hum lullabies in colour for this special baby

And if you know my style, you know I’m no stranger to the bright side of the yarn shelf.

The end result? A delightfully fluffy, joyfully vibrant pram blanket that refuses to be ignored.

No dull pram blankets here, thank you very much. This one’s special…

Why Choose Merino Wool for Baby Blankets?

When it comes to choosing the right yarn for a baby blanket, you want something that’s soft, safe, and built to last. That’s where Merino wool shines.

Merino wool is a natural fibre that’s been trusted for centuries, and for good reason. It’s breathable and thermoregulating, which means it keeps baby cosy in cooler weather but won’t cause overheating when things warm up. It wicks moisture away from the skin, so baby stays dry and comfortable, no clammy blankets here!

One of Merino’s superpowers is that it’s naturally antibacterial. That means it resists odours and doesn’t need to be washed as often as synthetic fibres. Plus, it’s a renewable and biodegradable resource, making it an eco-conscious choice for modern makers.

And here’s what really makes Merino stand out: it’s incredibly soft and gentle. Unlike traditional wool, Merino is fine and smooth, so it won’t cause itching or irritation, perfect for even the most delicate baby skin.

Looking After Your Merino Creations

Good news: Merino is surprisingly low-maintenance! Thanks to its natural antimicrobial qualities, Merino wool stays fresher for longer, which means less frequent washing compared to synthetic alternatives.

If you’re using a superwash Merino yarn (like Yarnsmiths Merino DK), it’s safe to pop it in the washing machine—just keep the water temperature cool (no more than 30°C) and opt for a gentle or hand-wash cycle.

Drying needs a little TLC: skip the tumble dryer if you can. Instead, lay your blanket flat to dry and gently reshape it while damp. If you’re ever tempted by the dryer, use a cool, delicate setting, but proceed with caution, as even “gentle” dryers can sometimes be a bit too enthusiastic.

Merino wool brings together everything you want in a baby blanket: softness, breathability, durability, and easy care. It’s a natural choice for something that’s going to wrap your little one in love (and a lot of snuggles).

Once completed this stunning blanket was gifted to a beautiful little girl called Imogen. My heart exploded when her Mummy sent me an image of her sleeping with her blanket.
