Free the Boobies: My Tips to a Bra-Free Life

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know I have a lifelong detest for bras. I don’t just dislike them, I loathe them. Restrictive, uncomfortable, and always leaving me wondering who actually designed these contraptions.

Last year I even had the professional fitting experience. I thought I’d found the holy grail of bras; comfortable, supportive, the answer to my prayers. Yet here we are a year later, and that same “perfect bra” now sits abandoned in my underwear drawer, staring at me like a sad, forgotten relic.

If I really dug deep, I could probably tie my bra aversion to a past PTSD moment, but truth be told? I just hate them. Always have. As a younger me I wore one purely to conform to society’s expectations, my partners expectations or simply because I wanted to attract the male gaze with a cleavage I could flirt with. (absolute shit feminist.. but I am honest!) But whenever I could get away with it, I went without, thank you, chunky jumpers of the 80’s, 90’s and 00s.

Here’s the part that always makes people blink: I’m not flat-chested. Far from it. According to the bra-fitting lady, I’m a 38FF. Yep. So no, my bra rebellion isn’t about size, it’s about clever dressing and reclaiming comfort.

On rare occasions I will wear one but those days are not often, trust me!

If you’re bra-weary too, here are my top tips for going braless with confidence (and a little subtlety):

1. Free yourself from worrying about what others think.

This is the hardest step. Going braless will feel odd at first, and yes, people might notice. But your body, your rules. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.

2. Start in Autumn and Winter.

Trust me, chunky knits and oversized jumpers are the perfect bra-free training ground. It’s far easier to begin in cosy layers than in a thin summer vest.

3. The power of the waistcoat.

My denim waistcoat is my secret weapon. It’s flattering, versatile, and hides just enough so the girls can bounce freely without me feeling exposed.

4. The humble cotton cami.

Worn under your clothes, it softens the bounce and adds a layer of nipple cover. Plus, it’s breathable and comfy.

5. Knitted layers are your friend.

Cardigans, gilets, waistcoats, they all provide texture and coverage while keeping you warm. Extra layers = extra confidence.

6. Blouses with breast pockets.

Those symmetrical little pockets? Absolute genius. They disguise everything while keeping you stylish.

7. Embrace textures.

Ribbed, knitted, or crepe fabrics work with your natural curves and make any bumps less noticeable.

8. Patterns are magic.

Florals, stripes, gingham, polka dots, they distract the eye and let your nipples blend into the optical illusion.

Going braless isn’t about making a statement for me, it’s about reclaiming comfort and refusing to let a bit of elastic dictate my day. If you’ve ever felt trapped by your bra, maybe some of these tips will help you too.

Here’s to comfort, freedom, and a drawer full of unworn bras we’ll never go back to.
