I love writing as you know, so I decided that this mornings coffee would be a simple explanation about Kundalini as some of you may not know. It turned into a longer blog than I expected but that is me some days, I like to ramble on….
If you’ve ever heard the word Kundalini, you’ve probably noticed it sounds a little mysterious, maybe even a bit mystical. But at its heart, Kundalini is simply the life force energy that lives within all of us, the spark that fuels our creativity, vitality, and sense of connection.
So what Is Kundalini?
In ancient yogic tradition, Kundalini is described as a coiled serpent of light resting at the base of the spine. When gently awakened through practices like yoga, meditation, or mindful movement, it rises up through the chakras, the body’s energy centres, helping to balance, heal, and awaken our awareness.
It’s not about doing something extreme or “mystical.” At a basic level it is about connecting to your natural flow of energy, the same force that brings peace, inspiration, and creativity into everyday life.
It is believed that your entire being; mind, body, and spirit goes through a massive energetic shift, causing you to move through life in a very different way. According to tradition, an awakening can instigate long-term changes, including:
- Feelings of blissfulness
- Improved self-awareness
- Enhanced psychic abilities
- More compassion and empathy
- Increased creativity
- Increased spiritual connection
- Feeling aligned and “in the flow” of life
Why do Kundalini yogis wear white?
Traditionally Kundalini yogis wear white primarily to expand their aura, which is believed to provide greater protection and projection of positive energy. White is also seen as a symbol of purity and clarity, which helps practitioners focus their minds, and is thought to increase self-awareness by making them more conscious of their actions.
Covering the head in Kundalini Yoga is a practice of containing and directing energy. The head is the centre of the crown chakra, the gateway to higher consciousness. By covering the head whether with a turban, scarf, or headwrap the energy at the crown and protect our spiritual awareness.
Are you any less a participant if you don’t wear traditional attire? Absolutely not, you do you and allow others to do the same.
So do you have to wear white to practice Kundalini? Absolutely not, you do what ever you feel works for you. If you want to wear white, go for it, each to their own. Kundalini is not a cult practice.
How Do You Have a Kundalini Awakening?
Practitioners of yoga traditionally spend years preparing for the highly anticipated event of an awakening. It can happen through practices like meditation, pranayama (breathwork), yoga, traditional Indian dance, and prayer. Or it can happen without warning. But unlike the snake that is hypnotised by the snake charmer’s mystical melody, a kundalini awakening cannot be summoned. Yoga tradition holds that you don’t have control over when or even if your kundalini energy awakens.
What Are the Signs of a Kundalini Awakening?
There can be many different indications that your kundalini is awakening. Signs of a Kundalini awakening include intense physical sensations like shaking, tingling, and heat, along with emotional and mental shifts such as heightened intuition, increased energy, vivid dreams, and a deep sense of purpose. Other experiences can be spontaneous movements, synchronicities, altered perceptions, and an overwhelming sense of bliss or profound peace.
Clearing Up the Confusion
People often think Kundalini is about awakening sexual desire. This confusion happens because the energy starts at the base of the spine, near the reproductive area. But Kundalini isn’t about sex, it’s about your natural creative life-force.
I often think that any human so self aware, content, creative and aligned with the flow of life emits sexual vibes so maybe this is also a reason. Maybe that is just me, who I am sexually attracted to and “my type”…totally guilty as charged.
Anyway…..This energy is the same spark that helps a seed grow, inspires art, or guides you when you’re making something with your hands. The warmth or tingling some people feel is simply the body waking up, not a sexual experience. It can help unblock sexual energy, but that isn’t its main purpose.
As Kundalini awakens, you might feel heat or movement in the lower belly or pelvis. This happens because the root and sacral chakras linked to creativity, pleasure, and emotional flow are becoming active. The sensations may feel warm or alive, but the goal is healing and transformation.
Kundalini is sometimes linked to Tantra, which can include sexual symbolism. But true Tantra is about balancing the masculine and feminine energies within yourself not physical sex, and that is a whole different blog altogether so stay on track…
Think of it like this: Sexual energy and Kundalini energy share the same source: your creative life-force.
How you use it is what makes the difference:
In the body, it creates life.
In the heart, it creates love.
In the mind, it creates ideas.
In the spirit, it creates awakening.
Kundalini isn’t about sex, it’s about turning your inner spark into growth and awareness.
Kundalini can however, gently help with sexual-energy blockages and womb healing because it wakes up the root and sacral chakras, the energy centres connected to the pelvis, sexuality, creativity, and the womb space. As this energy begins to flow, it brings warmth, circulation, and awareness back into areas that may feel tense, numb, or disconnected. This can help release stored emotions, soften old trauma, and rebuild a sense of safety in the body. Instead of focusing on sex, Kundalini reconnects you with your creative life-force, helping you feel more grounded, expressive, and at home in your own body.
How to Begin: The Gentle Way
You don’t need advanced yoga or deep meditation to connect with your Kundalini energy. It starts with presence, breath, and kindness toward yourself.
1. Ground Yourself
Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Feel your body supported by the ground or chair beneath you. Imagine roots extending into the earth, anchoring and calming you.
2. Gentle Movement
Slowly move your spine, simple seated rolls or soft stretches help energy flow naturally.
3. Breathe Light
Place your hands on your lower belly and imagine a warm golden glow at the base of your spine. With each breath, that light grows softer and steadier.
4. A Simple Mantra
Quietly repeat “Sat Nam” (Sut Naam), meaning “Truth is my essence.” It helps calm the mind and connect you to your inner rhythm.
5. Rest and Reflect
When finished, sit quietly for a moment and notice how you feel, more peaceful, balanced, and alive.
Visualise a soft white light above your head, showering you with calm energy.
Let your breath slow naturally.
Finish by whispering:
“I am calm, I am whole, I am light.”
Kundalini and Creativity
For many of us, this energy shows up naturally when we create. When you crochet, paint, sing, or write, you’re already moving your Kundalini energy, transforming thought and emotion into something beautiful and real.
Crochet, especially, is a form of gentle meditation. Each stitch is like a breath, each pattern a rhythm. You’re grounding your energy while letting your imagination flow freely, just as Kundalini moves through the body in harmony.
Kundalini isn’t about striving or searching for something new. It’s about remembering what’s already within you, your strength, creativity, and light.
It’s the quiet awakening that happens when you breathe deeply, make something with love, or sit in peaceful stillness.
So rather than something to fear or misunderstand, think of Kundalini as your inner spark, the creative life force that’s been waiting all along to shine.

Hope this helps explain it in some way. Obviously a trained Kundalini yogi could write a better in depth explanation but I am not one, I don’t claim to be one and I just like sharing simplicity so others understand.
Life is simple and doesn’t need to be complicated.
So if you fancy a bit more of that magical energy, do your own little deep dive daily practice like I do, join in with a class in your area or get on YouTube as there is loads of free resources there to follow.
