One of my favourite projects has to be a granny square crochet blanket. They’re relaxing, repetitive, and completely stress-free to make, which is exactly how I like my crochet!

One thing I definitely don’t enjoy is playing yarn chicken when I’m working on the border. Often I have plenty of leftover yarn scraps that are too good to throw away, but they’re often not enough to complete a full round.

So here’s a little tip that I use all the time.

I gather together my leftover yarn ends and join them with a magic knot to create one scrappy ball of yarn. Then I crochet a few rounds of double crochet using this colourful scrappy yarn as part of the border.

Not only is it a fantastic way to use up those leftover bits, but it also creates a lovely, colourful finish. It works especially well if your blanket already features lots of different colours, as the scrappy border ties everything together beautifully.

How to do it:

• Gather your leftover yarn scraps.
• Join each piece using a magic knot.
• Wind them into one scrappy ball.
• Crochet a few rounds of double crochet around your blanket.

This simple technique can add several extra inches to the overall size of your blanket while making sure very little yarn goes to waste.

Of course, if you have enough of your original yarn left, you can simply continue your border with that instead. But if you’re looking for a fun, colourful finish and a great stash-busting idea, give a scrappy border a try!
